Portuguese company creates world’s first concrete wine amphora
15th December 2025
The Portuguese company Wiseshape has created the world’s first high-performance concrete wine amphora.

The manufacturer explained that the concrete wine amphora was inspired by classic Greek and Roman design.
This innovative fermentation and wine storage tank has a capacity of 500 litres and measures 1.59 metres in height.
The WiseAmphora weighs approximately 1000 kilograms and features concealed handles for easy transport and movement.
An optional metal support is also available to allow the amphora to rotate 360 degrees, enabling intelligent and practical integration into wine cellars or wine tourism spaces, the manufacturer explained.
The WiseAmphora was designed and developed in secret in Coimbra over more than 1000 days.
The company said that the new wine storage format will allow producers and winemakers to develop high-end, controlled-volume, premium wines from special grape varieties.
Until now, most wine storage containers of this type were made of clay, as were the so-called qvevri, a version similar to amphorae.
However, until now, no producer had used the original and fundamental forms of Greek and Roman amphorae in conjunction with high-performance concrete.
