Carleigh Bodrug shared a breakfast recipe including one particular fruit on @plantyou as a gut health hack.
Cookery content creator Carleigh Bodrug, who has 5.3 million followers on her @plantyou Instagram account, recommended adding apples to breakfast to improve gut health.
In a video on TikTok, which has had over 136,000 likes, she said:
“Not only are stewed apples easy to digest, when you cook them they create something called pectin. This is a type of soluble fibre which acts as a prebiotic, feeding the beneficial bacteria in your gut.”
Studies have shown that apples also help decrease the risk of heart disease, cancer and asthma.
Recent research found that apples are in the top five fruits for nutritional quality.
The study found that the higher the intake of high-metabolic quality fruit and veg, such as apples and pears, the lower the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, type two diabetes and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
The recipe shared on @plantyou is:
Ingredients:
- 2 cups apples, cored and diced
- ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 tbsp maple syrup
- 1 tbsp coconut sugar, or brown sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- ½ tbsp cornstarch.
Instructions:
- Add all ingredients to a saucepan over medium heat. Cook covered. Stir occasionally, until the apples are tender, approximately 15 minutes
- Serve warm with oatmeal, yogurt and flax as desired, or as the base for a delicious apple pie.
