Coffee prices rise as farmers switch to growing durian fruit
20th September 2024
A massive increase in demand for the exotic fruit durian has paired up with supply disruption and extreme weather conditions causing a rise in coffee prices.
Overall, coffee bean prices have risen by 40% in the past year, The Sun reported.
Durian fruit, known for its strong odour, can be one to blame as it has recently become very popular in China.
As a result, some Vietnamese farmers decided to switch robusta coffee crops out for durian, due to its profitability.
Vietnam, the world’s biggest supplier of robusta coffee, has also experienced some extreme weather conditions such as drought and heat, as well as an increase in pests, which have stunted the growth of the country’s coffee crops.
Harsh weather has also damaged crops in Brazil, the largest global exporter of arabica coffee, noticeably increasing its price, The Telegraph confirmed.
Both arabica and robusta beans have risen in price to near-record highs.
